Our Story

From garage project to global recognition

Coastal Board Co. began in 2010 when lifelong friends and surfing enthusiasts Jake Thompson and Mia Chen combined their passion for board sports with their commitment to environmental stewardship. What started as a backyard workshop in Jake's Byron Bay garage has evolved into one of Australia's most respected board manufacturers.

After years of feeling disconnected from the mass-produced boards dominating the market, Jake and Mia embarked on a journey to create boards that would honor the traditions of craftsmanship while embracing modern, sustainable materials. Their first designs caught the attention of local surfers, who appreciated the perfect blend of performance and aesthetics.

By 2015, they had outgrown the garage and moved into our current workshop on Surfside Avenue, expanding the team to include other skilled shapers, designers, and artists. Today, Coastal Board Co. ships custom and production boards to riders around the world, while maintaining our commitment to small-batch quality and environmental responsibility.

Throughout our journey, we've stayed true to our founding principles: respecting the ocean, supporting our coastal community, and crafting boards that create meaningful connections between riders and the natural environment that inspires us all.

With over 20 years of surfing experience and a background in fine woodworking, Jake brings an artist's eye and craftsman's hands to every board design. His innovative approach to sustainable materials has earned recognition throughout the industry.

Mia Chen

Co-Founder & Design Director

Combining her background in environmental science with her passion for board sports, Mia oversees our design processes and sustainability initiatives. Her innovative graphics and commitment to eco-friendly materials define our aesthetic.

Liam O'Connor

Production Manager

A former professional surfer with a degree in materials engineering, Liam brings technical precision to our production processes. His expertise in composite materials has been instrumental in developing our eco-friendly construction methods.
